Digital Bedrock is a managed digital preservation service provider based in Los Angeles, CA.

We preserve digital content for media production companies, museums, artists, archives, libraries, orchestras, theatres, historical societies, and any other entity that needs help preserving its digital holdings. We work closely with our clients and act as their staff and infrastructure, building enduring relationships.

Complex metadata about a file’s characteristics is extracted in our custom-built system, and the asset’s bit health is monitored over time. Offline redundancy on LTO tape is provided in three secure locations, with assets migrated to new generations of LTO. Data can optionally be copied to the client’s cloud storage. Related services include legacy media migrations to the cloud, current LTO generations, or hard drives. Digital Bedrock also offers consulting services: collection assessments, metadata audits, software development, and training.

Digital Bedrock seeks a Digital Archivist to join our team. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity to learn about how different types of digital content are created, the physicality of digital preservation, and basic Python scripting and Linux commands. There is room for growth as the company expands.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze files using our custom-built software, Python scripts, Excel, and Linux.

  • Understanding how digital content is created and preserved across diverse communities
  • Finding hidden errors in data and performing forensic analysis
  • Restoring data from obsolete storage media carriers and backup systems
  • Data security practices

 Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience working with digital files in an archive, library, or post-production/media management environment. (2+ years)
  • Experience with common technical metadata extraction tools (ExifTool, MediaInfo, Tika) and validators (JHOVE), and comprehension of the extracted metadata.
  • Experience with Excel, basic python scripting, and Linux commands. These tools are used for data analysis.
  • High attention to detail, and double-triple-quadruple checking work.
  • Strong communication and writing skills. Reports and data analysis must be clearly communicated to the team and to clients.
  • Be a team player, and also be able to work independently.
  • Ability to juggle several projects at a time in a fast-paced environment.
  • Respect for data security and client confidentiality. We are responsible for other people’s data.
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds from the floor to a table. Data can be heavy.

  • Interest in and understanding of the dynamics of a growing business in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience with both Mac and Windows computers
  • Experience with data storage media: hard drives, LTO data tape.
  • A knowledge and appreciation of rapidly evolving digital preservation technologies
