Job Summary:
Inspect and prepare motion picture prints for film screenings, shipping, and archival storage.
Job Duties:
- Inspect, clean, repair and evaluate film elements.
- Complete print condition reports, cataloging forms and monthly reports.
- Review the storage standards and conservation of audio-only materials from the vaults and return them to the vaults as necessary.
- Monitor pending film loan schedule and prioritize workload to ensure compliance with deadlines.
- Inspect, prepare, catalog, pack, and ship loans requests to external venues (both domestic and international), in conjunction with the Registrar’s office. Note any damage and alert the Head of Information, Research, and Access and Senior Curator for compensation, if necessary, on return inspection.
- Give tours of the vaults when requested by administration.
- Track shipment and return of film elements.
- Access, catalog, and process backlogged donated prints. Make recommendations for deaccessioning and/or long-term preservation of such prints. Communicate with Senior Curator and Preservation Manager about the status of decomposing or unique prints.
- Participate in the student activities and curriculum of The L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation, including, but not limited to supervising projects, mentoring students during rotations, and assisting with student field trips, splicing workshops, and film inspection training for the practicum exam.
- Assist and train staff members, interns, and volunteers.
- Assist the Head of Information, Research, and Access in any research reports that need extra attention/information. This includes any level of inspection for titles that may have no information in TMS and requiring basic cataloging/documentation.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the Collection Manager, including, but not limited to Collection Management projects at the Louis B. Mayer Conservation Center and off-site storage.
Minimum Qualifications, Skills, and Competency Requirements:
- Advanced degree in Film Preservation or equivalent experience
- 1–2 years experience in motion picture preservation/conservation/film handling
- Hazardous shipping certification preferred
- Knowledge of international shipping protocols
- Attention to detail
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Organizational skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Reliable mode of transportation
