MMCC’s Tape Baking Cookbook

The mission of the Magnetic Media Crisis Committee (MMCC) is to support the archival community working to preserve audio and video magnetic media materials. The MMCC provides a collaborative space for knowledge-sharing, resource collection, project planning, advocacy, research, and development in order to promote awareness and develop concrete tools and strategies to cope with the growing crisis faced by magnetic media collections and the impacts of “degralescence.”

One of the original motivations for forming the MMCC was to create a space for sharing tacit knowledge—or what we like to call “anec-data” (a.k.a. anecdotal data). This kind of knowledge is rarely standardized, and there is often no consensus around the workflows that emerge from it. Although advances in science and engineering made audiovisual technology possible, much of the preservation practices surrounding it are shaped by personal experience, trial and error, collection materials, institutional priorities, available equipment, and resource constraints.

The MMCC Tape Bake Cookbook emerges from conversations about how degralescence has impacted current tape baking practices and necessitated changes to tape baking workflows as tapes continue to age. In an attempt to capture how the archival community it working now, this Cookbook will include:

  • Compilation of over 50 recipes from more than 30 contributors
  • Tape baking bibliography
  • Glossary of terms
  • Buyers guides
  • Remediation essentials
  • Tape stock data
  • Summary of recipe procedures (statistics on recipes increasing temperature, baking longer, differences between audiotape and videotape baking, etc.)
  • Anecdotes and stories
  • And more…!!!
