The University of Houston Libraries seeks a Resources Description Librarian with expertise in original and complex adaptive cataloging of unique materials and formats. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to projects that will ensure efficient intellectual access, discoverability, and accessibility of UH Libraries’ unique and special collections as part of its 2017-2021 Strategic Plan.

This position will report to the Resources Description and Management Coordinator in the Resources Description and Management unit of the Metadata and Digitization Services department (MDS). A primary role of this position will be collaborating with the Special Collections department and the Coordinator of the Music Library to provide bibliographic description to incoming collections and donated materials. The successful candidate will provide leadership for original and adaptive cataloging of music materials, including scores and sound recordings, housed in the Music Library. The position will also contribute to a coordinated effort to catalog the UH Libraries’ unique collections including the Houston Hip Hop Research Collection, Hispanic Research Collection, LGBT History Research Collection, and Energy and Sustainability Research Collection, as well as rare books and manuscripts in a variety of subjects.

Additional responsibilities include managing various resource description projects, contributing to the Library of Congress Name Authority File, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and providing training and direction to departmental staff in the areas of resource description, authority control, and cataloging. The successful librarian will be provided mentorship and professional enrichment opportunities to develop expertise as needed, and will be expected to stay abreast of current trends, standards, and practices.

The Resource Description Librarian is a librarian position. Librarians hold academic rank pursuant to the University of Houston Librarians’ Bylaws Document. They are expected to develop a record of service, scholarship, and professional development. The UH Libraries support the ongoing professional development of librarians, and our goal is to recruit librarians committed to continuous learning.



  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively with colleagues
  • Experience in the creation of original cataloging for music materials, including scores and recordings
  • Knowledge in resource description for special collections and rare materials using DACS and DCRM
  • Experience in resource description of multiple formats using national cataloging standards (such as, RDA, LCSH, LCC, AACR2, and MARC)
  • Knowledge of creating name authority records
  • Experience with integrated library systems and OCLC


  • Experience with ExLibris Alma
  • Experience with MarcEdit, ArchiveSpace, or similar
  • Bibliographic knowledge of one or more languages other than English
  • Knowledge of forthcoming changes with RDA, FRBR, BIBFRAME, linked data and semantic web
