About LUX:

LUX is an arts organisation that supports and promotes visual artists working with the moving image. Founded as a charity in 2002 it builds on the work of its predecessor organisations the London Filmmakers Co-operative, London Video Arts and the Lux Centre and a history which stretches back to the 1960s.

LUX offers a rolling programme of exhibitions, screenings, workshops, courses and talks as well as a reference library and mediatheque. LUX also represents the UK’s only significant collection of moving image works produced by visual artists dating from the 1920s to the present day, consisting of over 6000 works by more than 1500 artists.

LUX is seeking a highly organised and proactive Collection Manager to play a key role at the heart of our organisation, developing and implementing strategic approaches to collection care. This role is integral to providing access to LUX’s significant holdings of artists’ moving image, ensuring that LUX remains a welcoming, functional, and inclusive space for audiences, artists, supporters, and team members.

You will be responsible for overseeing the care, management, and preservation of the LUX collection which includes analogue film, video, and digital artworks. Working with artists and their representatives, the role encompasses overseeing the ingest, encoding, and cataloguing of materials, as well as developing proactive strategies for digitisation, restoration, and long-term preservation. You will work in close collaboration with colleagues across distribution and technical roles to foster alignment, support strategic decision-making and ensure best practice in both collection care and access.

The collection sits at the heart of LUX’s work, and this is a moment of real opportunity for how it is cared for, developed, and made accessible. More broadly, LUX is in a period of active development, and the post-holder will have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing shaping of our future direction, in support of our artist-centred mission and long-standing commitment to artists’ moving image in the UK.

The Collection Manager’s main responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and implementing a proactive strategy for the care, management and growth of the collection, including digitisation and restoration programmes. Including the ongoing management and care of analogue film, video, and digital artworks in the collection.
  • Managing the acquisition of new works into the LUX collection and contributing to the acquisitions panel process, including liaising with artists and their representatives, issuing contracts, overseeing the ingest, encoding and cataloguing of materials.
  • Liaising with artists to advise on the care and management of their work, including sourcing improved versions and remastering existing works where appropriate.
  • Maintaining, managing and improving the LUX archive store to ensure best practice in preservation and collection access. Managing and overseeing annual collection audits.
  • Supporting the Director in identifying and pursuing relevant funding opportunities for collection development and care. And overseeing the collection budget and related project budgets.
  • Facilitate research relating to the LUX collection, advising on and responding to research enquiries. Overseeing the commissioning of artist essays and contextual material to support collection access and engagement.
  • Overseeing print condition and digital quality control processes across the collection.
  • Coordinating the scanning and digitisation of analogue works in-house and through external facilities. Building and maintaining relationships with technical partners, laboratories and service providers.
  • Working with the Technical Director to develop and maintain effective monitoring and backup systems for digital preservation.
  • Assisting with the collection and analysis of evaluation data. Reporting to the LUX Board of Trustees, funders and stakeholders on collection matters as required.
  • Ensure collection records and artist data are managed in accordance with LUX’s data protection policies and relevant legislation, maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and appropriate access controls across all collection documentation.
